Alejandro Gutiérrez performs a wide repertoire of symphonic works that extends from the classical period to the present, including constant world premieres of works by composers from his native country, Costa Rica. His exceptional versatility, artistic honesty, sensitivity, and intellectual curiosity allow him an openness to experiences in other musical genres such as opera, ballet, musical theater, choral music, zarzuela, pop music, Latin music, as well as to design and produce countless series of educational concerts.
Maestro Gutiérrez is the Artistic Director of the OSUCR (The Professional Orchestra of the University of Costa Rica). Under his artistic vision and leadership, the OSUCR has developed as one of the most influential artistic organizations in the country, receiving the 2019 Carlos Enrique Vargas National Music Award as an organization. For his part, maestro Gutiérrez has been awarded the “Special Prize of the City of Passau”, Germany – 1990, the “Carlos Enrique Vargas National Music Prize for Conducting” – 2016, and the “Carlos Enrique Vargas National Music Prize of Chamber Music – 1997.

During his three seasons as Associate Director of Pacific Symphony (Orange County, CA, USA) – 2012-2015, Alejandro left a strong imprint of his high artistic, professional and human values, attracting significantly new audiences.
Alejandro has had the honor of collaborating with renowned film composers, including John Williams (Star Wars; Raiders of the Lost Ark; Harry Potter) and Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones). His international experience also includes concerts as guest conductor of the Houston Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Bakersfield Symphony, Kalamazoo Symphony, Southern California Philharmonic, Nice Conservatory Symphony Orchestra – France, OFUNAM – Mexico, Michoacán-Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra Panama National, Honduran Philharmonic, Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra – Brazil, Tatui Wind Festival Orchestra – Brazil, MIMU Chamber Ensemble – Brazil, and Trujillo Symphony Orchestra – Peru.
Alejandro has a Doctorate in Musical Arts with an emphasis in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Texas in Austin, USA. He is a faculty member of the School of Musical Arts at the University of Costa Rica, and is frequently in demand to offer talks and master classes at universities in the United States and Latin America. Starting in March 2024, Maestro Gutiérrez assumes the Musical Directorship of the “Orquesta Universal”, Costa Rica.
